Esther and her husband Hans came to live in Spain in 2005. To start with she took time off to get to know her Spanish colleagues, specifically the paediatric physiotherapists. By working with them and assisting them she came to understand various differences; differences in education, therapy modules, cultural background, expectations.
Her roll at the Centre will be threefold: working as a (consultant) paediatric physiotherapist, teaching postgraduate physiotherapy and doing research.
Treating children is different to treating adults. Their bodies are constantly changing because of their growth and development. Young children cannot tell you what is troubling them, they need their parents or caregivers to translate their needs.
According to Esther assessing the problem and finding the right way to help them is the most rewarding and difficult task we have.
Treatment varies, depending on age. It consists of handling, facilitating correct movement in the very young and using play and games to facilitate better and functional movement, strengthen muscles, correct posture and loosen joints in the older child.
Esther has been treating children for 31 years and still loves it.
Children with all kinds of problems can be treated. Children born premature often need extra support during their development.
Children with developmental problems, gait problems, musculoskeletal problems, fitness problems.
Children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, cerebral palsy, spinal conditions, congenital muscular torticollis, muscular dystrophy, children with motor and cognitive problems, brachial plexus injury, brain injury and children with cardiopulmonary conditions.
Paediatric physiotherapy helps children after surgery, children with burns, children with tumours and children with developmental coordination disorders DCD.
Esther is a registered member of the Dutch and Spanish Society of Physiotherapy. Her complete CV is on the website mentioned earlier.
Together Esther and her husband Hans have 7 children and 3 grandchildren living in Holland, Germany and Australia.
Esther speaks Dutch, English, German and moderate Spanish.
